Hellenburg Castle was a castle near Baarland.
Hellenburg Castle probably originated around the year 1300. It is possible that there was already a residential tower shortly before 1300, but that time is not certain. What is certain is that there was first a residential tower and then the square castle was built in the course of the fourteenth and perhaps the fifteenth century.
The castle was probably destroyed in the Cosmas and Damianus flood of 1477
In 1957, the castle was discovered by chance during earthworks. Under the direction of castle specialist Dr. Renaud, the rest of the castle was uncovered. The foundation of the main castle was surprisingly well preserved, but not much remained of the outer castle.
The outer bailey was located on the north side of the castle. A special fact is that the main castle was not accessible via a bridge, but via a dam.
The ruins of the castle are listed as monuments and are open to the public.
