Station Breukelen

Welcome to Breukelen! This beautiful village full of monuments, shops, and cozy restaurants is just 1.5 km away for walking or cycling. You can explore the village by following the signs of this 'Then and Now walk.'

You are standing here at the second oldest railway line in the Netherlands, opened in 1843. At that time, there was only a stop here, as the emphasis was mainly on freight transport. It was not until thirty years later, when passenger transport by train became more important, that a real station was built. This was heavily bombed during WWII by the Allies due to its strategic location.
In the photo, you can see the station building in 1980. A year later, it would be replaced by a new building.

That building was also demolished when, in the early 20th century, the railway line between Amsterdam-Bijlmer and Utrecht was doubled to four tracks (2002-2007). Then the current platforms were built.

The railway line lies between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal (1892) and the A2 (1954). This bundle of transport routes largely runs parallel to the Vecht.

This sign is part of the Then and Now walk through Breukelen. The route passes by the most distinctive places and buildings of the village center and shows images from the past, placed in such a way that you can see the current situation from the same perspective as the photographer or artist of that time.
