Breda Castle with Castle Square

The Duke of Brabant sold Breda in 1350 to the Dutch nobleman Jan van Polanen, who fortified the existing castle with a moat and four corner towers. Until the 80-year War, the Orange-Nassaus lived here, with William of Orange as the most famous inhabitant. In 1667 the Treaty of Breda was signed here by representatives of England, the Republic of the United Netherlands and France. The Royal Military Academy (KMA) has been located there since 1828. Many of the original fortifications are no longer present, the castle has been demolished and built almost continuously over the centuries. For a long time, the castle square was a meeting place for travelers on the route from Antwerp to Holland. On the farthest corner of the square is De Prins Kardinaal, at the time one of the most famous inns in Breda. Many important historical figures have stayed here, such as the author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe.
