The famous Carré theater is named after the circus director Oscar Carré, who opened the theater in 1887. As early as 1879, Carré's circus held its winter performances at that location by the Amstel in a temporary wooden building. Initially, the stone Circus Carré was also only used for circus performances during the winter months.
Nowadays, Carré is mainly used for musicals, pop concerts, circus, music, theater, and cabaret performances.
In the theater, there is the restaurant De Stallen, named after Oscar Carré's stables. Also notable is the Logefoyer, which was formerly the residence of the circus performers, and The Fire Screen, the largest painting in the Netherlands made from a single piece, painted by Siet Zuyderland.
