In the middle of swamp forest and reedlands, the village of Kalenberg was hidden for a long time until a road was built to it in 1959. In the meantime, mainly water tourists have discovered the village, but part of it is still only accessible by bicycle or boat. From Kalenberg you can make a trip deeper into the Weerribben by canoe or flat whisper boat.
After the peat digging, the Kalenbergers started to focus on fishing, livestock farming and reed cultivation. Kalenberger reed is still a sought-after building material for covering roofs.
