Museum de Zwarte Tulp, the museum about the flower bulb culture, takes you into the richly varied story of the flower bulb culture: the centuries-old history, working on the land with its seasonal rhythm, scientific research, export and tourist promotion. The museum also shows how artists have been – and still are – inspired by bulbous plants over the centuries to create work of extraordinary beauty.
The museum has been in existence since 1985 and is housed in a building in the centre of Lisse that once served as a bulb shed. Parts of the museum are the early 20th-century boardrooms of sand-lime brick factory Van Herwaarden BV, called the Comparitie, and the museum garden where a variety of bulbous plants bloom in season. There is also a museum shop and there is also the opportunity to drink coffee, tea or soft drinks.
