Lock De Eendracht
The (canalized) river Gouwe cuts through the heart of Boskoop and was once an important supply route for tree nursery soil. The transport of nursery products also used to occur mainly via water. Long, flat boats were used for this purpose: the characteristic shouwen. The lower-lying nurseries can only be accessed from the Gouwe via locks. Since nowadays, the transport of Boskoop trees and plants is done by road, the locks are no longer used for this purpose. Only the transport of soil still accounts for some "lock traffic." The locks now have a water-retaining function and are also occasionally used for recreational boating.
The lock connection between the Gouwe and the Laag Boskoop polder has existed for a very long time. The newspaper archives from 1913 mention a boatman who fell into the lock. Fortunately, he was quickly rescued by the lock keeper. The current lock gates are from 1985. At this lock, the significant drop between the Gouwe (NAP -0.60 m) and the lower-lying polder can be clearly seen. The lock is still operated (by appointment).
It is now a quiet place in Boskoop, primarily utilized by local residents and walkers. Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful view.
