This stream rises a few kilometers south of Ahaus, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The stream here bears the name Aa, from where also the name Ahaus (House on the Aa).
Then the stream winds past Ahaus and through Alstätte (here called Alstätter Aa) ne comes to Buurse across the border with the Netherlands. From the border, the stream is known as Buurserbeek.
Until about 1400 the Buurserbeek flowed through Haaksbergen, after which the stream was shifted to the south and connected to the Schipbeek. This created a direct connection to the IJssel and the Hanseatic cities of Deventer, Zwolle, Kampen and Zutphen could be reached. Partly because of this, the stream had an important function in the 17th century.
Now the stream, which winds beautifully between the nature reserves, has only a recreational function as 'fishing water' in addition to the 'water management'.
