Description

The oldest date of a church in Sluipwijk is from 2 October 1311. The Dutch count William II then decreed that the inhabitants of Nieuwenbroek had to use the church of "Sluupwijc". Because the reclamation of Sluipwuijk is dated to the end of the thirteenth century, it is assumed that this must have been the first church of Sluipwijk. It may have been a wooden church, which was later replaced by a stone building.

Until the last quarter of the sixteenth century, the population of Sluipwijk was Roman Catholic. After the Reformation, this changed. The first Reformed preacher arrived in 1588, Rev. Nicolaas Ruyt. He encountered a lot of opposition due to the Reformation and the still existing Roman Catholic movement.

In 1574 the private synod of South Holland had divided its territory into classes. Sluipwijk was incorporated into "Leiden with the whole of the Rhineland". In 1587 this classis was again split into High and Low Rhineland. This administrative process of splitting and merging the classes eventually led in 1816 to an entirely new class division, in which Sluipwijk with Reeuwijk, Waarder and Waddinxveen were added to the classis of Gouda.

Sluipwijk was a community of peat people. After a lot of land was turned into water, poverty arose here. This can be seen in church history. In the 19th century, both the construction of a new church (1861) and the construction of a presbytery (1882) played a role. The ecclesiastical congregation appealed to the committee of the General Synod for a contribution from the Fund for Needy Churches. As a description and substantiation of the application, it was indicated that the municipality consisted for the most part of peat workers and thus only "counted a few well-to-do people".
