At number 415 is the former residence of Gerard Reve. Gerard Reve lived here with his parents from 1938 to 1948 and wrote 'The Evenings' there. The book describes the last ten days of 1946 from the perspective of 23-year-old office clerk Frits van Egters. Number 415 (then still number 116) served as a model for the house in which 'The Evenings' takes place, referred to in the book as Schilderskade 66. Despite great appreciation for the young writer's talent, Godfried Bomans described the book as 'so gloomy, so devoid of any positivity, so drab, so cynical and completely negative.' Simon Vestdijk and other critics recognized in the work the voice of a generation that emerged from the war numbed and without faith.
