The villages of Nijverdal and Hellendoorn are located at the foot of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. With almost 25,000 inhabitants, Nijverdal is the largest town in the municipality of Hellendoorn. The name Nijverdal is derived from nijverheid and Reggedal. The name refers to Nijverdal's roots in the textile industry.
Nijverdal is located at the junction of the river Regge and the street road from Almelo to Zwolle, which was built in 1829. Nijverdal is also located at the foot of the Sallandse Heuvelrug on the border of Twente and Salland.
Nijverdal is located on the site of the former Noetsele by the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij which founded a factory (a weaving mill, a spinning mill and a model weaving mill) in 1836 in close cooperation with the Englishman Thomas Ainsworth.
Around 1850, the Salomonson brothers opened the Royal Steam Weaving Mill, putting an end to the home industry.
Nijverdal is the only place in the Netherlands where gold has been mined. An official concession has been issued for the mining of gold.
South of Nijverdal lies the Holterberg.
