The Cunerakerk of Rhenen is a late-Gothic hall church. The tower is one of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture in the Netherlands, built between 1492 and 1531. Remarkably, this church is so large. The tower reaches a height of no less than 82m. This is due to the fact that Rhenen was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, with veneration of Saint Cunera. She is worshipped for ailments related to the throat and peat. Saint Cunera was strangled by the (jealous) wife of Lord Radboud of Rhenen in the 4th century. The hanging cloth of Cunera can still be seen at the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. The feast of Cunera is celebrated on June 12.
