Here, as in so many places in the Biesbosch, a withybed forest of willow species has developed on the swampy subsoil. Withybed cultivation came into vogue from about 1800. The branches are used for wickerwork, chair seats and baskets, among other things. Until a few decades ago, many people were active here in the rush, reed and withybed culture. They stayed there from Monday to Saturday in simple shelters and worked from early in the morning until late at night. Hard work. The Griendwerkerhut is a replica of such a shelter for the men who worked here.
