The lock is a so-called impeller lock. The gates of the lock have the property that they can turn the water on both sides and function well in high and flowing water. The Papsluis was built into the dike here in 1815. It is one of the five fan locks that were constructed for the New Dutch Waterline and are intended for the inundation of the Uppel polder. The lock is the southernmost inundation lock of the New Dutch Waterline. Next to the lock is a new bulkhead shed where the beams are stored that can be placed in the chamber.
