Nijmegen, Valkhof - Allied crossing of the Waal
The resistance from the Germans on and around the bridges of Nijmegen was fierce. On September 20, 1944, the Allied military command decided to try to capture the traffic bridge not only from the south side but also from the north side. The Waal crossing had begun, and the Americans found themselves in heavy crossfire.
