Gendt and Doornenburg are two villages in the municipality of Lingewaard, in the easternmost area of the Betuwe between Rhine and Waal. Here our Protestant congregation is located in a predominantly Catholic area. Compared to the r.k. church, our Protestant congregation forms a small church community of about 250 members. Our small monumental church is located in Gendt on the Torenlaan.
Our Protestant Church has a long history. It arose from the church reform that was initiated in the 16th century, in the year 1517. The history of our church building is even older. Its origins lie in the 15th century. After considerable neglect, the nave of the large Romanesque church was demolished in 1844. The Protestants had enough of the choir room for their church services. This was beautifully restored in the years 1962 - 1966, and is now also for our municipality as a "jacket that fits us perfectly".
The church building is located on the Torenlaan in Gendt and it has been on the list of Monuments since 1960. Our church seal bears the image of church and tower and has the caption: Aqua viva hic semper flute: Living water always flows here. This is a reference to the river Waal, which is constantly flowing in our vicinity. At its core is the invitation to come and hear God's Word here in communion and to be happy with it for life. Since 2006 we are a Protestant church congregation, a combination of Reformed, Reformed and Lutheran. The churchgoers form an active and close-knit community and are open in their faith.
