The Town Hall of Middelburg is located on the Markt. This is the only historic building on the market. There are several catering establishments around the market, and on Thursdays there is a weekly market. The oldest mention of trade on the site of the current Market dates back to 1295. In that year, the bishop of Utrecht decided that the cemetery of the St. Martin's or Westmonster's Church had to be moved. The cemetery had been used as a marketplace for many years and was partly deconsecrated because of this. It was decided that the existing cemetery would not be used any further and should be enclosed by a wall. Shops were soon built against this wall.
