Stellendam is a relatively young village; The polder in which it is located was only drained in the 18th century. However, around 1220 there was an island near the current location of Stellendam, Zomerland.
The name Stellendam comes from "stelle", a height raised outside the dike that served as a refuge for a shepherd who pastured his sheep outside the dikes.
Stellendam is home to an extensive fishing fleet (± 50 cutters).
