Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist

The Roman Catholic St. John the Baptist Church in the hamlet of Indoornik, near Randwijk, in the Betuwe is closed for worship. In 2017, the last Eucharist was held in Tournai. The regional Mary Magdalene parish is rejecting the church due to declining church attendance, the "impossibility of finding new volunteers" and financial shortages. Of the approximately 1000 parishioners in Indoornik, Randwijk and Zetten, about 90 contributed to the Church Balance campaign in recent years and about ten were active as volunteers in the faith community. In recent years, the Eucharistic celebrations have usually attracted about 20 people.

For the time being, the parishioners can continue to use the meeting room between the church and the presbytery, where a prayer service is held once a month. For Eucharistic celebrations, they are referred to the Werenfridus Church in Elst, about 11 kilometres away. In the cemetery next to the church, which remains the property of the parish, a Lady Chapel was built last summer.

The St. John the Baptist Church was consecrated in 1949. The previous church was irreparably damaged in 1944 during Operation Market Garden (the Battle of Arnhem).

The church and the adjacent presbytery have been sold. Funeral homes in the area will use the church building for funeral ceremonies. The presbytery can be used as a condolence room.
