The Stedelijk Museum Vlissingen is a museum founded in 1890. In 2000, it closed its doors to merge into the Zeeuws Maritime muZEEum.
The young law student Willem van der Os Jr., son of a Vlissingen fire truck manufacturer, is one of the Vlissingers at the end of the nineteenth century who is concerned about the disappearance of urban heritage. He protests against a decision by the city council to transfer fragments of the city hall that burned down in 1809 and two medieval gravestones to the museum of the Zeeuwsch Genootschap in Middelburg.
The society, which was founded in 1769 in Vlissingen, moved to Middelburg over 80 years earlier, after it could no longer afford to acquire a suitable building to house its expanding museum collection due to internal financial troubles. Since then, the city has been deprived of a museum institution, and historical objects were placed under the management of the society by the city council. The council's decision in 1889 to sell the silver treasure, the only precious items that remained after the city hall fire, for ƒ 18,000.00 to the Rijksmuseum faced resistance.
Van der Os suggests in the newspaper to temporarily store the historical objects in a part of a municipal archive. He receives support from three city council members, Kalbfleisch, Gewin, and Wibaut, who join forces in a committee for an antiquities room.
