Mathematician Ludolph van Ceulen moved from Hildesheim to Delft and afterwards to Leiden. In 1594 he opened a fencing school in Leiden. In 1600 he was appointed the first professor of mathematics at Leiden University.
He provided the first major European contribution since Archimedes calculating Pi. He got to an estimate of π that is correct to 35 decimal digits.
He had the digits engraved into his tombstone
