Already in Roman times there was a settlement here called Caspingium, which was located on the southern heerweg (road for the army) between Noviomagus (Nijmegen) and Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). In and around Asperen quite a few Roman finds have been made.
Around 1314 Asperen obtained city rights.
North of Asperen along the Linge is the wheel the Gallows Wheel. A wheel is a deep puddle that was created during a dike breach.
