The city park Oudorperhout is crisscrossed by walking and cycling paths and waterways. Unique plants such as the reed orchid and rattlesnake have grown there, and you can also find many meadow birds such as godwits and lapwings. In the park, remnants of two castles can be found and four of the traditionally six drainage mills still stand. These mills were used during the reclamation of Heerhugowaard to drain the excess polder water to the north. The term 'drainage mill' originated from the low lift height, where the water was 'swept off'.
