St. Joseph Chapel
In 1699, a chapel was built in the hamlet of Smakt in honor of St. Joseph. This was commissioned by Baron Johannes, Albertus van der Boye and Neerijsche, lord of Castle Macken. The main motive for the construction was the great distance from Smakt to the parish church in Venray village. Throughout the 18th century, the devotion to Joseph developed somewhat and the chapel began to attract pilgrims. Only from 1887 did Smakt develop into an important pilgrimage site. It is the only pilgrimage place of St. Joseph in the Netherlands. St. Joseph is the patron of a happy life state, the Christian family, and a blessed death. The St. Joseph Chapel still attracts a large number of visitors.
