The settlement of Hat-Heim is first mentioned in a text from 819.
Hattem received its city rights in 1299 from Count Reinoud I of Guelders and is a Hanseatic and fortified city.
In 1404 the castle St. Lucia was built. Popularly, this building would become known as "the fat pewter". The castle owes its name to the thick walls, which were the thickest in the Netherlands. In 1778 this castle was demolished because the municipality decided to sell the stones.
In 1786 Hattem and Elburg became known because a strong Patriotic movement arose there, but was quickly suppressed by the troops of Stadtholder William V.
The 700th anniversary was celebrated in 1999 with the national entry of St. Nicholas. The apostle Andrew is the patron saint of Hattem.
General F.A. Hoefer did important work in the field of history for Hattem. Hoefer was married to C.M. Baroness Van Heemstra (sister of the then mayor of Hattem) and through his actions the Dijkpoort of the impoverished town was restored, which was also decorated with four turrets designed by P.J.H. Cuypers.
