The British and Poles tried to capture the bridges of Arnhem in 1944. Whoever controlled the bridges had a free passage to the rest of the country. The Allies wanted to end the Second World War as quickly as possible with as few casualties as possible. Therefore, the airborne units had to capture and hold the bridges so that the troops could advance overland, via the middle of the Netherlands, to Germany. On paper it was a good plan, but in practice the implementation was very disappointing and the soldiers had to be evacuated.
In the end, some 2,100 men were evacuated from the north to the south of the Rhine. But not everyone made it to the other side. The wounded, medical personnel and the clergy stayed behind and were taken prisoner. Some tried to swim to the other side, but many drowned from exhaustion. The retreat of the British First Airborne Division became a black page in the liberation of the Netherlands.
