The Lingebos is a very young forest. Its construction began in 1958, during the land consolidation of the Western Tielerwaard. Besides the establishment of nature, the Lingebos had two more functions: space for recreation for the residents of the Randstad and sand extraction for the A15 motorway and the interchange near Gorinchem. On June 26, 1969, the Lingebos was officially opened by the then Princess Beatrix. In the 1980s, interest in recreational areas declined, resulting in the division of the management of the Lingebos. The Lingebos now consists of two areas: the nature reserve under the supervision of Staatsbosbeheer and a recreational area managed by the municipality of Lingewaal. The recreational pond covers 10 hectares and is as deep as 14 meters in some places.
