The town was originally called Ukele and already in the year 996 there was a church. The location of the current church dates back to the 13th century. The last restoration was in 1963. The city survived several disasters, looting by the Vikings, floods and a major city fire in 1772. Near the church, at the beginning of Gasthuisstraat, Torenstraat and Voorstraat, there are two national monuments diagonally next to each other: The Old Town Hall at Voorstraat 2 dates from the end of the 16th century and the Smidshuis (De Oude Smidse) with a high gable roof probably from the 18th century. It also served as an inn. Opposite these buildings is the Drostenhuis, recently restored, which houses a bakery where the famous Heukelum pretzels are also for sale.
