At the beginning of the 12th century, an abbey was founded in this area, the Norbertine Abbey Marienweerd. Over the years, this abbey grew into a very rich monastery. After the Reformation, the monastery came into the hands of the Van Bylandt family in 1734, where it also received the status of 'High Lordship'. Descendants of this family still own and manage / operate the current Estate Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt. The entrance to the estate is marked at the beginning of the Notenlaan by a beautiful entrance gate. The manor was built in the 18th century on the vaults of the former abbey, whose cellars with crossbows can still be seen.
