House in Linschoten

Source: wikipedia

Description

In a corner of the adjacent road, in the middle of the greenery, lies the charming Huis te Linschoten, which seems to be covered with red shutters. A striking feature of the house are the two towers from the 17th century, which tower up at the front of the house. These towers, crowned by bell-shaped roofs, change halfway from a square to a round shape. They are typical of the house.

Linschoten is the westernmost country estate in the province of Utrecht. It is not just accessible, but bordered by an outer moat, which surrounds the entire park forest. Jan David Zocher Jr. gave the park its current landscape style in 1834 and provided it with a large meandering pond. On the roads around the estate itself we find several characteristic houses and farms that belong to the estate. The driveway to the house is closed off by a large entrance gate from around 1725. This fence has four brick pillars topped with ornamental vases in the Louis XIV style. The house itself is moated and accessed by a brick bridge. On the square in front of the house there are two houses: the one on the left was rebuilt in 1960, but the one on the right is still original.

From 1625 onwards, Johan Strick, dean of the chapter of Oudmunster, bought up pieces of land in the Hoge and the Lage Polder. Around 1638 he set to work building his almost square house. Great-grandson Jan Hendrik had the section between the two towers raised around 1720. The following generations have changed little about the house, but they have provided many stories. At the beginning of the 19th century, Huis te Linschoten was a centre of culture and there were contacts with Goethe. Unfortunately, after 1860 it became quiet and the house was only inhabited in the summer months. In 1891 the Utrecht cigar manufacturer G. Ribbius Peletier bought the House in Linschoten. His son Gerlacus took care of the restoration between 1908 and 1912. Since the death of the third generation in 1969, a foundation has taken care of the estate.
