SPACE FOR THE RIVER

By all measures, the rivers have been squeezed into a straitjacket, eliminating much of the natural variation along the rivers. In recent decades, the call for more natural dynamism along the rivers has increased. The PKB (Planning Core Decision) Room for the River includes a coherent package of measures (for example, the digging of secondary channels in the floodplains and the construction of longitudinal dams) with the dual aim of preventing flooding of the major rivers and improving the 'spatial quality' of the river area. In terms of policy, the emphasis has shifted from dike improvement to river expansion.
