Estate Nijenburg is an 18th-century Dutch country estate between Alkmaar and Heiloo. Today, Nijenburg is a nature reserve. The area lies partly on a nutrient-poor beach ridge and partly on nutrient-rich peat, clay, and sandy soils.
In 1705, Jan van Egmond van de Nijenburgh began the construction of the estate. The initially simple house was executed in a sober Dutch classical style in red brick with block-corner pilasters. The coach house of Nijenburg is unique in size within the context of Dutch country estates. The exterior of the coach house has remained almost in its original state and provides a much better representation of the strong architectural vision around 1700 than the main house. Around 1712, the main building was extended at the rear with a library. In the 19th century, the appearance changed as the façade was plastered white, a balcony was added, and doors and windows in Empire style were realized. The gardens include many cultural-historical elements from the 18th and 19th centuries, making Nijenburg unique and rare in the region.
