Vincent worked in May 1884 on a number of paintings of windmills. He painted the Collse watermill that he passed by when he walked from Nuenen to Eindhoven. The Collse watermill has two red roofs and two wheels. The mill served as an oil and grain mill. At the time of Vincent, the mill was located near the Eeneind station on the Geldropscheweg. When Van Gogh painted this mill, he wrote to his friend Anthon van Rappard: “It’s a similar case to the two other watermills we visited together, but with two red roofs and it can be seen clearly from the front – with poplars around it. It will be superb in autumn.” The painting Watermill is located in the Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch. The other mills that Vincent visited with Van Rappard were the Opwetten watermill and the Hooidonk mill in Nederwetten.
