Gunterstein

The current Gunterstein is built on the foundations of a medieval castle that was destroyed by the French in 1673. The garden was designed at the same time as the house, in 1680. This is evidenced by a painting of the lady of the house, in which the design drawing for the garden is held by her nephew. The design features a symmetrical, formal garden, characteristic of garden architecture at the end of the 17th century. Following the model of the gardens of Versailles and Het Loo palace, impressive gardens with straight sight lines, neatly trimmed hedges, water features, fountains, pavilions, and statues were established at all country estates. Such gardens were very costly to maintain. Along with the economic recession around 1800, romanticism also came into fashion. The rigid, formal gardens no longer fit the ideal image of a rural nature and were all removed. They were replaced by landscape parks with winding paths, ponds, and a wide variety of trees. The - freely accessible - park behind Gunterstein is an example of this.
