De Groest is a shopping street in the center of the Dutch town of Hilversum. De Groest runs from the intersection with Stationsstraat, Langewenst, and Naarderstraat to the roundabout with Langestraat, Schapenkamp, and Emmastraat. Side streets include Nieuwe Doelenstraat, Oude Doelen, Kerkstraat, Herenstraat, Veerstraat, Smidsteeg, Prins Bernhardstraat, Spuisteeg, Spoorstraat, Biersteeg, and Leeuwenstraat. Unlike the rest of the center of Hilversum, cycling is allowed on De Groest.
De Groest has numerous national monuments, including a former factory owner's house at numbers 104-106, where the Nederlandsche Seintoestellen Fabriek was housed from 1918 to 1921. Other notable buildings include the former office of De Gooi- en Eemlander at number 21 and, at number 23, the cinema New York dating from 1913, later known as Rex from 1925. After closing in 1984, this municipal monument was repurposed as a restaurant. On the corner with Veerstraat at number 116 stands another former factory owner's house belonging to the carpet factory NV Stoomtapijtfabriek Nederland, which is also a municipal monument. The name Groest means marshy place, which is where the street gets its name.
