The Scheldeplein is a city square in Amsterdam-Zuid, named after the river Scheldt, which flows through France and Flanders, which flows into the Westerschelde estuary. The square got its name in 1927 and is located in the Rivierenbuurt in the extension of the Scheldestraat and borders the Europaplein on the south side. For the construction of the North/South line, the starting shaft was built under the Scheldeplein for the tunnel boring machines that drilled from here in a northerly direction in 2011. There is also an emergency exit of the metro on the square, incorporated as a hatch in the pavement.
