Nieuwestad is a neighborhood and a shopping street with a canal in the city center of Leeuwarden in the Dutch province of Friesland. The name Nieuwestad was first mentioned in 1456 as an added neighborhood or canal. Between both sides of Nieuwestad is a pedestrian bridge at the height of Herenwaltje; and several pipes, from west to east: Adje Lammerts- or Westerpijp, Duca Martenapijp, Nieuwepijp, Lange pijp, and Tontjepijp. In 1601, a section between the Lange pijp and the Martenapijp was designated as a meat market. The north or narrow side was usually not referred to as Nieuwestad until 1877, but by the names of the pipes. The south side has traditionally been called Nieuwestad. From 1827 to 1891, a Winkel van Sinkel was located at Nieuwestad.
