Borssele coal power plant, part of the Borssele power plant, was a Dutch coal-fired power plant located directly next to the Borssele nuclear power plant near the village of Borssele. In 1976, a conventional fossil fuel power plant, mainly powered by oil and natural gas, was built next to the nuclear power plant. The first and second oil crises made oil and gas significantly more expensive, and in 1983 it was decided to convert the plant to be suitable for coal. A new boiler with a boiler house and a 170-meter high chimney was constructed. Burning coal releases a lot of sulfur dioxide, a source of acid rain, and one of the first flue gas desulfurization plants in the Netherlands was built at the power plant. Using quicklime, the sulfur from the flue gases was 'washed' and bound into gypsum.
