The Delft Thunderbolt was a disaster that occurred on October 12, 1654. At a quarter past ten in the morning, an explosives depot located in the northeastern part of the Delft city center exploded on that day. Historians estimate that at least a hundred people died in the disaster, and a death toll of 'several hundred' is also not ruled out. However, the exact number of people who perished in the disaster has never been established. Virtually every building in the city center was damaged, and the area east of the Verwersdijk was completely leveled.
