Julianatunnel

The Julianatunnel in Geleen is a traffic tunnel under the Maastricht-Sittard railway line, the industrial railway coming from the freight yard of the Chemelot industrial estate and the ring road Geleen-West. The tunnel became necessary after the opening of the Mijn Maurits in Geleen in 1926 and the subsidiary company SBB on the west side of Geleen in 1929, followed by the development of the new residential area Lindenheuvel located between the two companies. Many miners who went to the mine traveled by train to Geleen and got off at the Geleen-Lutterade station. This often led to dangerous situations as hurried workers frequently crossed the tracks after leaving the train in order to arrive at work on time. In 1929, plans were made to tunnel under the railway in this area and construction began in the autumn. The client was the Dutch Railways, the designer was engineer Ankersmit from the NS, and the contractor was the Huitzing brothers from Winsum and Coevorden. The financing was provided by the NS, the State Mines in Limburg, and the Municipality of Geleen.
