You cross the small river De Danne here. The Danne flows from the Vecht to the west. Beyond the Amsterdam Rhine Canal, this waterway is called the Aa. It is an old tributary of the Vecht and, in that capacity, has also been of great importance for transport between the Vecht and the hinterland to the west of the Vecht. Breukelen emerged at this junction of these two rivers in the 8th century.
