Kasteel Heemstede is a country estate in the municipality of Houten at Heemsteedseweg 20, near the town of the same name Heemstede. The house was built in 1645 in Dutch classical style, as a successor to the knight's court town of Heemstede, which was located 500 meters to the south. The client was Hendrick de Pieck van Wolfsweerd. Maria van Winssen, Lady of Heemstede and scion of the Van Winssen family, was the first inhabitant of the castle. The house is characterized by a symmetrical style. At all four corners there are angular towers half incorporated into the building. There is a wide moat around the house. Because in the 17th century the castles no longer served as defensible fortresses, the construction of the new house Heemstede focused on luxury and pleasant living.
