The Margraten Plateau is part of the Mergelland and Heuvelland regions in the south of Dutch Limburg. The area is used for agriculture and is located at an average height of about 140 m. On the west side, the area is bordered by the Maas valley, which is about 100 m lower, and in the south by the Noordal, a valley that slopes from east to west, part of which has no river and where the village of Noorbeek is located. The steep transitions to these valleys are covered with unique slope forests, such as the Savelsbos and the Eijsderbos. Further north, on the slope descending to the Maas valley, is the nature reserve de Bemelerberg, where calcareous grasslands can be found. In Bemelen, there is a hamster reserve, which is home to the field hamster.
