Van Starkenborgh Canal

The Van Starkenborgh Canal is a canal in the province of Groningen that connects the Prinses Margriet Canal with the Eemskanaal. The canal is being adapted for CEMT class Va, as part of the Main Shipping Route Lemmer-Delfzijl. In 1911, a commission was established for the construction of a new waterway between the city of Groningen and the Zuiderzee; the 'large shipping canal from Lemmer to Groningen'. After many years of consultation, during which there was disagreement between the provinces of Friesland and Groningen over who should bear which part of the costs, the authorities in Groningen decided enough was enough. After the construction of a new lock at Gaarkeuken in 1924, they decided in 1928 to start the work themselves without an agreement with Friesland. Approximately 1400 people were employed for this purpose, of which 1300 were part of the work relief program. They often had to carry out the work mostly by hand for low wages. The canal was newly constructed from Zuidhorn to the Eastern lock. The section from Zuidhorn to the Frisian border is the widened Hoendiep.
