Black Mountain: the name of this wooded 'mountain' is probably derived from the black humus soil that makes up the soil. At the highest point (16 m) there are some beech trees. Once there was an undulating primeval forest with many tall oaks and beeches, the Gooiersbos. Around 1600 the forest disappeared, because the heirs cut down too much and burned down for their fields and did not give their large sheep herds emerging forest a chance. Het Gooi turned into a barren landscape of undulating moors. From the 17th century there was forest again, thanks to the park forests that large landowners planted on the country estates. This is also the case here, on the Hoorneboeg estate to which the Zwarte Berg belongs.
