Zanderij Maarn, also known as Zandgat Maarn, is a former sand quarry and sand hole on the Bergweg in Maarn, south of the A12 motorway. Until 2001, sand was still extracted from this sand quarry of the NS. After the recreation board received the area on a long lease in 2002, the area was closed to the public for the first few years, so that the vegetation could take its course. This created a natural terrain with spontaneously emerging vegetation. The vegetation on the banks and the marsh areas around the lake serve to prevent swimming in the dangerously deep lake. In November 2013, Zanderij Maarn was opened as a walking area. The western part of the lake is closed off as a resting area for wildlife. On the north side, under the embankment of the A12, there is a layer of contaminated soil, a remnant of the NS past as a marshalling yard.
