Zeister Forest

The Zeisterbos is a forest in the east of the Dutch town of Zeist. The forest forms a broad green strip on the eastern side of Zeist, together with the parks and forests of the country estates Hoog Beek en Royen and Pavia. Since 1994, the forest has been owned by the foundation Het Utrechts Landschap.

Previously, the forest was part of the estate Beek en Royen, which dates back to 1771. The straight avenue system included the Woudenbergse weg as a sight axis. The straight tree avenue between the Driebergseweg and the Arnhemse Bovenweg, called the Kippenlaan, is a remnant of the old layout that belonged to Beek en Royen. The former spring of the estate Pavia largely dried up due to the low groundwater level. Since 1795, many Scots pines have been planted as a production forest. In 1913, the forest was purchased by the municipality of Zeist to protect it from building plans and to maintain it as a recreational area. The purchased forest consisted of 147 hectares of coniferous wood, over 30 hectares of oak coppice, and a few hectares of hardwood. On the advice of landscape architect Hendrik Copijn, soil improvement and new, varied planting were implemented.
