Handel is the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in North Brabant. A miracle occurred in this region in 1220, out of what was still a wild and deserted heath. A statue of Mary was found there out of nowhere in a hawthorn bush. As a result, construction of the then chapel in Handel began. However, the oxen that brought the first cartload of stone refused to stop in the right place and continued on to the current location of the church. During the construction of the chapel, a holy spring emerged when there was a severe shortage of water. This 'holy well' has also led to three recognized miraculous healings.
