Nieuwenhof Castle

Nieuwenhof Castle was a castle in the north of Moergestel that has been used as a monastery since 1840. Then the Sisters of Charity of Tilburg moved into the building, which was extensively renovated and expanded in 1880. The name of the monastery is: Sint-Stanislausgesticht.

The castle was the residence of the lords of Moergestel. The oldest known gentleman is Dirk van Horne. After this the lordship passed to Jan III van Polanen, also called Jan van der Leck, and after his death in 1394 to Hendrik van der Leck, also called Hendrik van Polanen. In 1428 Hendrik died and Johanna van der Leck became the heiress. In 1461 she died and the lordship passed to Pieter van Vertaing, who was also lord of Asten and married to Margaretha van Culemborg, who ruled after Pieter's death. She died in 1505 and after this Moergestel passed to Eustachius of Boussier, who was also lord of Vertaing. In 1511 he was succeeded by his son Floris van Boussier. After his death, his sister, Johanna van Boussier, inherited the lordship. She married Charles of Rubempré in 1531, and the lordship passed to this family. In 1545, the couple's son, Jan van Rubempré, became Lord of Moergestel. After his death in 1547, the lordship came into the possession of his brothers, Charles and Anthony.
