Canal through Voorne

The Kanaal door Voorne is a canal in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was dug between Hellevoetsluis and the village of Nieuwesluis, which disappeared in the 1960s, and was completed in 1829. It is 10.5 km. long, over 30 m. wide and 5.30-5.70 m. deep. The canal was connected to the Brielse Maas via a lock at Heenvliet and to the Haringvliet via a lock at Hellevoetsluis. Around 1960, when the Hartel Canal was built, it was decided to dam the Canal through Voorne in the north.
Due to the construction, the connection between Rotterdam and the sea was significantly shortened. King William I ordered the digging of the "Voornsche canal" because at the beginning of the 19th century the mouth of the Meuse was considerably silted up. As a result, ships had to make a major detour through the Haringvliet, the Hollandsch Diep, the Dordtsche Kil, the Oude and Nieuwe Maas, where the chartering of larger ships had to be transhipped. With the construction of the Voornse canal, the naval port of Hellevoetsluis also got a fast connection to the navy yard, 's Lands werf', in Rotterdam.
